Does Kratom Show Up in a Drug Test?

Kratom is mostly undetectable on a 5-panel drug test. However, it may show up in blood and urine tests.

Introduction

“Does kratom show up in a drug test?” A question most often asked by employees in states where kratom is banned. Rest assured, it doesn’t frequently show up on regular drug tests. However, it will show up in a kratom 10-panel, blood, and urine tests.

The majority of workplace tests are 5-panel drug tests and are unable to detect Kratom.

A 5-panel drug test is a test that is used by the DoT (Department of Transportation), federal government agencies, and private agencies for the screening of their employees. The test is known as a 5-panel drug test because it checks for 5 drugs. These drugs are as follows:

  • THC
  • Opiates
  • PCP
  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines

However, some agencies tend to use 10-panel drug tests. This 10-panel drug test detects kratom.

Here are the drugs that show up on a 10-panel drug test:

Amphetamines  Methamphetamines, meth, speed, ecstasy
THC Cannabinoids, marijuana, hash
Cocaine Coke, crack
Opiates Heroin, opium, codeine, morphine
Phencyclidine PCP, angel dust
Barbiturates Phenobarbital, butalbital, secobarbital
Methaqualone Diazepam, alprazolam, clonazepam
Benzodiazepines Quaaludes
Methadone Opiate analgesic
Propoxyphene Darvocet

Is it Possible to Detect Kratom in Urine?

Yes, it is possible to detect kratom in urine.

Kratom Capsules tend to last in the system even after 5 to 7 days of use. However, the chances of detection might differ according to:

  • Dosage
  • Usage frequency
  • Physical health

Does Kratom Show Up on a Blood Test?

Commonly used blood tests are unable to detect kratom in the body. But kratom is detectable via specialized blood tests i.e. GC-MS and LC-MS/MS.

These blood tests use highly advanced techniques to find active kratom ingredients in the body.

However, these methods are seldom used as they are costly and time-consuming.

Does Kratom Show Up on a Saliva Drug Test?

There are no standard saliva tests that are specifically designed to test for kratom.

Kratom detection via saliva test is an unexplored territory. Currently, there is very limited research on this subject.

Saliva drug tests are used for the detection of alcohol and might also detect the presence of other drugs.

Moreover, the detection window of a saliva test is very short. It can only detect a drug if it was consumed a few hours ago.

Does Kratom Show Up on a Hair Drug Test?

Hair testing can detect drugs even after 90 days.

However, it’s still not certain whether hair testing can detect kratom intake or trace its active ingredients in the body. There is no concrete proof of it at the current moment. Only a few studies suggest that kratom metabolites can be traced in hair samples.

How Long Does Kratom Stay in the Blood?

Kratom’s elimination window is said to be around 5 to 6 days. But the exact or precise time duration for the elimination of any drug from the system is dependent on a lot of factors such as:

  • Dosage
  • Liver condition
  • Age
  • Bodyweight and fat percentage
  • Co-occurring health problems
  • Presence of other drugs

Kratom’s half-life is said to be 24 hours. A drug’s half-life is the indication of the time period after which almost half of the active ingredients of the drugs leave your system.

Having a 24-hour half-life means that half of the kratom substance will be eliminated from your body after that time.

The Bottom Line

Kratom is unidentifiable in a lot of commonly used drug testing methods. The research on kratom’s easy detection is still in the process. The detection of kratom may become easier as the research progresses.

For now, it is mostly undetectable on a 5-panel drug test but may show up in blood and urine tests.
